THE PHILOSOPHY OF ARGUMENTATION

The fifth edition of the PhilArg sessions aims to continue the investigation of the philosophical foundations of argumentation theory, and, in particular, to examine further its links with linguistics and the philosophy of language. The theme for this edition is The Individual Arguer: Goals, Functions and Effects of Arguments. We remain open to submissions to present innovative research on all aspects of argumentation and rhetoric.

Submissions are now closed, but non-presenting participants are welcome. Everyone should register on the main conference page here and check regularly for more details. Due to the large nuber of submissions, PhilArg will now run for all three days of the conference, 16-18 May.

Presentations will last 30 minutes, including 10 minutes for discussion. We intend to maintain our tradition of publishing selected papers and plan a special issue of the journal Argumentation on the themes of the event. See the Archive for a library of past publications.

We are delighted to announce that our plenary speaker will be Dima Mohammed, Nova University, Lisbon. Her talk will be on: Public arguments and the multiple publics: Challenges for theory and practice.

Please note that these sessions are part of the main conference, and organisational matters are dealt with on the main conference page. Participants of PhilArg are full members of the PhiLang conference and access to all sessions is open to everyone.

This edition of PhilArg is organised by the research team of the project Aida: Attitude and Identity in Argumentation.
