On March 15, we will meet for a lecture delivered by our guest-editors, followed by the panel discussion introducing the essays published in the issue. Join us to celebrate!
Venue: Lecture hall A2, University of Lodz Philological Faculty building on Pomorska 171/173, 91-404 Łódź
Schedule of events:
15.15–16.30 Lecture “Envisioning the Ecological Future: Progress, Regress and Ecotopian Temporality” by Prof. Agnieszka Soltysik Monnet and Prof. Christian Arnsperger (University of Lausanne)
The talk will consider three contemporary scenarios of the ecological future: John Michael Greer’s “catabolic descent,” William deBuys’ “hospice,” and Ernest Callenbach’s “ecotopia” –all three of which aim to challenge the mainstream obsession with the “progress or apocalypse” dualism flowing from modern thought. In addition to discussing the cognitive and cultural obstacles to realizing a more environmentally sound world, we will critically examine these visions and we argue that when combined in creative ways, they offer an approach to the ecological future that is both realistic and inspiring.
16.30-17.00 Coffee Break
17.00–17.45 Discussion panel (Participants: Dr hab. Małgorzata Myk and dr Agata Handley (Co-Editors-in-Chief of Text Matters, UŁ) in conversation with Prof. Agnieszka Soltysik Monnet, Prof. Christian Arnsperger, dr hab. Katarzyna Ostalska (UŁ) and dr Monika Kocot (UŁ).
