Przedstawiciele sieci UNIC z wizytą na Uniwersytecie Łódzkim

In the last days of August we had a pleasure to host representatives of the international alliance – European University of Post-Industrial Cities (UNIC) – the alliance that the University of Lodz has recently joined.

The guests from the Erasmus University Rotterdam and Ruhr University Bochum met with the authorities of our university and UNIC UniLodz Team. Development and future of the UNIC alliance were discussed in relation to the University of Lodz and Malmö University (Sweden) joining the project this year. A visit to the University of Lodz campus as well as Faculties of Management, Biology and Environmental Protection, Mathematics and Computer Science, and Philology was an important point of the programme. Apart from visiting individual buildings, the guests met with the authorities of all the faculties. The meeting was mainly devoted to the possibility of additional international cooperation, both at the student level and the possibility of conducting joint research by scientists working at universities affiliated with UNIC.

Moreover, the UNIC alliance and University of Lodz representatives met with the authorities of the city of Lodz. The meeting participants included Adam Pustelnik – Deputy Mayor of the city. They discussed various issues, including the need for cooperation between the universities and the city, in particular the idea of creating the so-called City Labs, which have an integrating function, bringing science closer to the residents of the city.

University of Lodz plans to launch new joint fields of study and training programmes, or the UNIC Inter-University Campus. Additionally, work on interdisciplinary projects implementation, whose goals will be to improve the academic potential of Lodz and the region will be carried out.

UNIC is one of 44 alliances of European Universities – international universities of the future, promoting European values and identity, and revolutionising the quality and competitiveness of European higher education by deep institutional integration and the implementation of innovative solutions. Currently, the Alliance consists of ten partner universities:

  • Erasmus University Rotterdam (the Netherlands) - coordinator
  • University of Deusto (Spain)
  • Ruhr University Bochum (Germany)
  • University College Cork (Ireland)
  • Koç University (Turkey)
  • University of Liège (Belgium)
  • University of Oulu (Finland)
  • University of Zagreb (Croatia)
  • University of Lodz (Poland)*
  • Malmö University (Sweden)*

One of the most important objectives of UNIC is to shape students and researchers, who by gaining knowledge, teaching and working throughout Europe, will become change agents. They will play a key role in the transformation of urban regions. At the same time they will contribute to the resilience and renaissance of Europe’s post-industrial urban centres, bringing science to the city. As a result, a new generation of students and researchers with the knowledge, skills and societal consciousness will emerge – they will shape the European Education Area.
