From the University Desks to the Cinema Archives. Visit to the Educational Film Studio in Łódź

Students from the Institute of Contemporary Culture of the University of Lodz attending the "Film Culture of Łódź" course led by dr hab. Ewa Ciszewska visited the Educational Film Studio – a place that still allows for an "inside look" into the history of film production.

Once there, we saw film reels – a  whole lot of them – and had a chance to talk about the material dimension of cinema, which is easily lost in the digital age. There was also a story that will stay with us for a long time: the rather tragic fate of a hamster family "starring" in one of the films of the Educational Film Studio…

– reports dr hab. Ciszewska, adding:

We would like to thank for the tour and, above all, for regularly disseminating films of the Studio– on YouTube, at public screenings and in museums.

Educational Film Studio (WFO) is a Polish film institution based in Łódź (Kilińskiego 210). It was officially established on 29 December 1949, based on the Educational Film Department of the Film Institute, which had operated since 1945. The institution has operated continuously in the same location since its inception. During its existence, the Studio has produced nearly 5,000 films, which have won a total of over 1,200 awards at film festivals.
