A variety of disciplines, diverse perspectives and one common theme – the female body. On Friday, 23 January 2026, at 6:00 p.m., the University Gallery at M. Skłodowskiej-Curie11 will host a discussion with experts from three fields: biological anthropology, sociology and art. They will discuss how canons of beauty affect our bones, why the female body still functions in a male world, and how art can become a tool for emancipation. The event is the culmination of the scientific and artistic project "(Nie)dopasowane – o kobiecości między biologią, sztuką a społeczną normą" [(Mis)matched – on femininity between biology, art and the social norm]. It is also the last chance to see the "(Mis)matched" exhibition.

The "(Mis)matched" project combines scientific and artistic perspectives, creating a space for in-depth reflection on how biology, culture and art shape our understanding of femininity. The final event on 23 January at 6:00 p.m. will feature a discussion by:

  • dr hab. Beata Marcinkowska who is an artist and the creator of the exhibition (The Strzemiński Academy of Fine Arts Łódź)
  • Dr Beata Borowska who is a biological anthropologist (Department of Anthropology, Faculty of Biology and Environmental Protection, University of Lodz)
  • dr hab. Dominika Byczkowska-Owczarek who is a sociologist of the body (Department of the Sociology of Culture, Faculty of Economics and Sociology, University of Lodz).

The discussion will be led by Dr Krystyna Dzwonkowska-Godula – a sociologist from the Faculty of Economics and Sociology, University of Lodz, a member of the Equality Council at the University of Lodz.

About femininity from three perspectives

I carefully examine issues related to the body, femininity and its ambiguous nature, treated as a cultural construct subject to constant transformation. In my work, I often refer to the full contours of the female body – says creator of the exhibition, dr hab. Beata Marcinkowska from the Strzeminski Academy of Fine Arts Łódź.
The “(Mis)matched” is not just an exhibition – it's a space for dialogue and a shared exploration of the meanings of the female body from various perspectives: artistic, anthropological-biological and sociological ones.
