Head of the Department of Romance Literary Studies: prof. Anita Staroń 

The Department conducts scholarly investigations in the area of Romance literary studies, and its principal research directions include: 

– reception of antiquity in sixteenth and seventeenth-century France, ars emblematica in early modern Europe, Iconography and Iconology, ancient ars memorativa and its reception, ancient Rhetoric and its reception, history of ancient medicine and its reception, history of the medical book in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. 

– short stories in sixteenth and seventeenth-century France (especially bloody tales, tragic stories, epitomes of tragic stories, miraculous stories, pious stories, diabolical stories, canards, discours bigarré), cosmographies, humanist tragedy, rewriting, echoes of religious wars in literature, theory and practice of exemplary discourse, humanistic rhetorical patterns, reception of Antiquity in humanistic thought, history of printing. 

– French and Italian Renaissance literature (especially French short narrative forms), literary relations between France and Italy during the Renaissance, satire, the reception of Antiquity in the humanistic thought 

– Italian literature of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries: romanticism, decadence, Scapigliatura, works of the Risorgimento period and the post-Union period; the influence of fascist ideology on literary works; links between Italian literature and politics 

– French prose at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries: evolution of narrative techniques, thematic and stylistic considerations; Decadence and Symbolism; works of Octave Mirbeau and Rachilde; ecocriticism; zoopoetics 

– French poetry and poetic prose of the second half of the 19th century; evolution of literary forms; aesthetics of symbolism and decadence; ecocriticism and ecopoetics; feminist criticism; animal studies; literary works of Francis Poictevin 

– Feminist literature from the 19^th and 20^th century; literary genres and their ambiguity, especially in the context of women’s writing from that period; popular fiction and socially engaged novels; Camille Pert’s literary body of work 

– European theatre and drama of the 19th and 20th centuries, with particular emphasis on aesthetic and ideological transformations; theatre of social contestation; poetics of contemporary drama and its relations with tradition; theatrical avant-gardes and their influence on the development of stage language; the language of theatre and artistic performances in the context of semiotics and intermediality; contemporary Italian and French literature from a dramaturgical and comparative perspective; comparative literature, with particular emphasis on the connections between literature and theatre; theatre as a didactic tool in teaching foreign languages (French and Italian); theory and practice of literary translation and theatrical translation, with particular emphasis on stage adaptations and the issues of cultural transposition; multilingualism in theatre and the role of foreign languages in shaping modern drama and stage performance. 

 – Rhetorical Foundations of Literary Theory, Opera and Lyric Theatre, Melodrama in France, Francophone Canadian Drama in Quebec 

– French non-fiction literature, political literature, contemporary culture of France and the Francophone world.

Le département se consacre à la recherche dans le domaine des études littéraires romanes, avec pour principales orientations de recherche :   

– La réception de l’Antiquité dans la France des XVI^e et XVII^e siècles, ars emblematica dans l’Europe moderne, iconographie et iconologie, ancienne ars memorativa et sa réception, rhétorique ancienne et sa réception, histoire de la médecine ancienne et sa réception, histoire du livre médical aux XVI^e et XVII^e siècles 

– Les formes narratives brèves dans la France des XVI^e et XVII^e siècles (notamment les récits sanglants, les histoires tragiques, les épitomés des histoires tragiques, les histoires prodigieuses, les histoires dévotes, les histoires diaboliques, les canards, les discours bigarrés), les cosmographies, la tragédie humaniste, les réécritures, les échos des guerres de religion dans la littérature, la théorie et la pratique du discours exemplaire, les modèles rhétoriques humanistes, la réception de l’Antiquité dans la pensée humaniste, l’histoire de l’imprimerie 

– littérature italienne des XIX^e et XX^e siècles : romantisme, décadence, Scapigliatura, œuvres de la période du Risorgimento et après l'unification ; influence de l'idéologie fasciste sur les œuvres littéraires ; liens entre la littérature italienne et la politique / la letteratura italiana dell'Ottocento e del Novecento: romanticismo, decadentismo, Scapigliatura, opere del periodo risorgimentale e del periodo postunitario; l'influenza dell'ideologia fascista sulle opere letterarie; i legami tra letteratura italiana e politica 

– La prose française au tournant des XIX^e et XX^e siècles ; évolution des techniques narratives, aspects thématiques et stylistiques ; esthétique de la décadence et du symbolisme ; œuvres d'Octave Mirbeau et de Rachilde ; écocritique ; zoopoétique 

– La poésie française et la prose poétique de la seconde moitié du XIX^e siècle ; l'évolution des formes littéraires ; l'esthétique du symbolisme et du décadentisme ; l'écocritique et l'écopoétique ; la critique féministe ; animal studies ; les œuvres littéraires de Francis Poictevin 

– La littérature féministe au tournant des XIX^e et XX^e siècles ; les ambiguïtés génériques, notamment dans l’écriture féminine de cette période ; littérature populaire pour les femmes et la littérature socialement engagée ; l’œuvre romanesque de Camille Pert 

– Le théâtre et le drame européens des XIX^e et XX^e siècles, avec une attention particulière aux transformations esthétiques et idéologiques ; le théâtre de la contestation sociale ; la poétique du drame contemporain et ses relations avec la tradition ; les avant-gardes théâtrales et leur influence sur l’évolution du langage scénique ; le langage théâtral et celui des performances artistiques dans une perspective sémiotique et intermédiale ; la littérature italienne et française contemporaines, envisagées sous un angle dramaturgique et comparatif ; la littérature comparée, en particulier les interactions entre la littérature et le théâtre ; le théâtre comme outil pédagogique dans l’enseignement des langues étrangères (français et italien) ; la théorie et la pratique de la traduction littéraire et théâtrale, avec une attention particulière aux adaptations scéniques et aux enjeux de la transposition culturelle ; le multilinguisme au théâtre et le rôle des langues étrangères dans la construction du drame moderne et de la performance scénique.
